The Casting Process
Rings are often cast in a steel mould, or by lost wax casting.
Lost wax casting – wax is injected into a rubber mould and then encased in a hard shell. The wax is then melted away, leaving the desired shape for molten metal (e.g. gold or platinum) to be poured in. When the metal has cooled, the shell is peeled away, leaving the metal casting behind. This casting will have a ‘feeding sprue’ on it – a bit of extra metal where it was poured into the mould. This is cut away before the ring is cleaned and polished.
