Winter Weddings

Why would anyone get married in the winter?

Think back to the last few weddings you went to. Chances are that there were all largely similar affairs – an indoor ceremony followed by photos in the country hotel or church grounds, and a champagne reception in the sunshine with guests in summer frocks or loosened ties.

With a high proportion of marriages taking place in the summer months, guests can find their summers dominated with wedding after similar wedding. A winter wedding is a real chance to do something different – and save some money at the same time.

Get creative – stand out in people’s memories

Whilst no-one wants their wedding day marred by rain, a bit of creativity means that a winter wedding can be as elegant and beautiful as a summer ceremony. You have the choice of trying to recreate the summer atmosphere and hoping for a bright sunny day, or of going with the winter theme by choosing a candle-lit castle or cosy manor house for the reception. If your wedding date is near Christmas then all the better – rich reds, gorgeous greens and stunning silvers are ideal for a truly magical colour scheme. A winter wedding is also an ideal opportunity to step outside the norm with the wedding dress – forget that obvious strapless gown that every bride seems to wear in the summer. Embrace vintage glamour with an elegant fur stole, or choose a wedding dress with long ornate sleeves to really make an impression.

Save money – and have the day you’ve always dreamed of

A winter wedding gives you that extra chance to really make your dreams come true. Your perfect venue is much more likely to be available and, even if they don’t seem to be cheaper in the winter, they are likely to be more open to offering discounts to be sure of utilising the space. Autumn sales provide the ideal opportunity to make big savings on bridesmaids’ dresses, suits, favours and the wedding dress. The money you save on the overall wedding can be used in so many ways – upgrade your wedding rings from palladium to platinum, or 9ct to 18ct gold. Or use the savings to have the honeymoon you’ve always dreamed of – whilst enjoying the off-season discounts on travel.

But what about the photographs?

Gambling on a beautiful white snow backdrop for photographs could be risky, but you can always have the back-up of a cosy country house reception room with gorgeous architecture and open fire. A dramatic display of coloured umbrellas could add a quirky twist to outdoor photographs, by contrasting the monochrome of the traditional wedding outfits. Just make sure the photographer is prepared for braving the elements!

A winter wedding really is a unique chance to make the most of your big day. The venue is less likely to be booked up, the florist won’t be juggling so many orders and the photographer won’t be as jaded by a season of same-y weddings. Most importantly, you and your guests will have a day that creates memories that will really stand out and last forever.
