The Buyers Guide Step 4 - Profile or shape

The profile of a ring refers to the shape you would see if the ring was viewed as a cross section.

Which profile you choose is largely dependant on personal choice, we recommend you try a few different profiles and gauge for yourself which one you prefer. Take advantage of our sample ring service before you decide. The last thing you want is an uncomfortable fit on a ring you will be wearing for the rest of your life.

Some profile names are obvious where as others require some explanation. The visual guide (below) should help you understand different profiles.

Shaped wedding rings are designed to fit around the diamond of an engagement ring. Depending on what diamond your engagement ring holds will decide on which shaped wedding ring you need.

If you are unsure as to which shaped ring to choose email us a picture of your engagement ring and we will be happy to assist and offer recommendations.

Depth of ring

The depth of the ring is also known as the 'wall thickness'. It is the distance from the inside to the outside of the ring. This, more than anything, has the greatest influence on the overall weight of the ring and therefore price.

We provide most of our rings in three depths - light/standard, medium and heavy.

Light/standard: Wall thickness = 1.3mm

Medium: Wall thickness = 1.7mm

Heavy: Wall thickness = 2.1mm

When deciding which depth to opt for, the general advice is to match the depth of your existing ring (such as an engagement ring), should you have one. If you do not have an existing ring that your weding ring will be worn next to, your decision should be based mainly on comfort. Men with larger fingers will often go with the 'Heavy' fit rings with a depth of 2.1mm

Width of ring

As with the depth of the ring, we have a number of options on most of our rings. The width of rings vary from 2mm up to 12mm. We can go larger in special cases

Things to consider when deciding the width of your ring are:

Width of your existing ring - The general advice if you have an engagement ring, for example, is to match the width. This is not a hard and fast rule and many people prefer a wedding ring with a greater width to their engagement ring. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this, so long as the rings are comfortable when worn together.
