The Buyer's Guide to Wedding Rings Part Two – Profile, Width, Depth and Shaped-to-fit
A wedding ring's shape can make a huge difference to the fit and comfort of the band. The word 'profile' refers to the shape you'd see if the ring was viewed as a cross-section.
In the plain wedding rings section of our website, you'll be asked to choose the profile first, then choose from each available combination of depth and width. Shaped wedding rings have their own category.
Ladies
If you wear an engagement ring, you'll need to consider what will fit snug against it - you may want something shaped if your engagement ring centre stone is low-set.
Men
Many men have never worn a ring before, so comfort will be the top priority. The profile, width and depth of the ring will determine how snug the ring is on the finger, whether it moves around, and whether it pushes into the neighbouring fingers.
Profile
Court - The most traditional of wedding bands – curved on the inside and out for a comfortable fit.
D-shape - rounded on the outside, flat on the inside. Fits against a lot of engagement rings.
Flat-court - the opposite of a D-shape: flat on the outside but rounded for comfort on the inside.
Flat-sided court - Like the court profile, but with flattened sides and less of a dome.
Double-comfort - developed by WRD for a groom who wanted a hybrid of the court and flat profile designs. A nicely rounded, yet unobtrusive style.
Flat - A square profile, with a contemporary feel.
Halo - A cylindrical profile the whole way around.
Concave - A chunkier band, sunken through the middle.
Depth
The depth of the wedding ring refers to the measurement from the deepest point of the cross section. We often refer to this as light, medium, heavy or extra-heavy weight. The light bands are 1.3mm deep, medium is 1.7mm, heavy is 2.1mm and extra-heavy is 2.5mm.
Width
The width of the ring is the amount of space along your finger it covers. Almost all the rings we sell are between 2mm and 10mm. The width can affect the comfort of the ring, and even the size needed, as a wider ring means more skin is displaced. If you're wearing a wedding ring with an engagement ring, consider the width of the two rings together – you may need to adjust the ring size.
Shaping
Ladies with an unusual engagement ring which doesn't fit snug next to a traditional band may need a shaped wedding ring. We have designs to fit any style; whether in the shape of a wishbone, twist, a cut-out or a delicate curve. Some of the shaped wedding rings even come with diamonds to perfectly complement your engagement ring.
Samples
Our sample service is a way to try on different shapes, profiles, widths and depths of ring to decide what will be most comfortable. Men find this useful as the most comfortable ring isn't always the most obvious choice.
