Welcome back to our Sunday segment, Wedding Readings Ideas. Here we source and share some of our favourite texts perfect for weddings. This week we are focusing on wedding readings for the Best Man. We try and include a variety of ideas so that there is a reading suggestion for every kind of speech at every kind of wedding!
If you are looking for a reading suggestion for a specific event, please feel free to leave us a comment so we can help you source one.
This week’s reading is a quote attributed to Bob Marley. Known primarily for his music, Marley imbued everything he put his hands to with a depth and spirituality that made him a worldwide icon. Both versions of this quote have been attributed to Marley, so feel free to choose which gender version feels more appropriate to your speech.
“He’s not perfect. You aren’t either, and the two of you will never be perfect. But if he can make you laugh at least once, causes you to think twice, and if he admits to being human and making mistakes, hold onto him and give him the most you can. He isn’t going to quote poetry, he’s not thinking about you every moment, but he will give you a part of him that he knows you could break. Don’t hurt him, don’t change him, and don’t expect for more than he can give. Don’t analyse. Smile when he makes you happy, yell when he makes you mad, and miss him when he’s not there. Love hard when there is love to be had. Because perfect guys don’t exist, but there’s always one guy that is perfect for you.”
“She’s not perfect – you aren’t either, and the two of you may never be perfect together – but if she can make you laugh, cause you to think twice, and admit to being human and making mistakes, hold on to her and give her the most you can. She may not be thinking about you every second of the day, but she will give you a part of her that she knows you can break – her heart. So don’t hurt her, don’t change her, don’t analyse and don’t expect more than she can give. Smile when she makes you happy, let her know when she makes you mad, and miss her when she’s not there.”
This is one of our favourite wedding readings for the Best Man, because it hits the perfect note between friendship, camaraderie and a deeper message. We love the way this quote sounds like it could be part of your normal speech. It will fit in perfectly with anything else you have to say, whilst adding a bit of interest.
The themes of perfection and imperfection mean this is the perfect quote to end a cheeky speech with. After all of the jokes you make about your friend, you can cap it off with this quote. This will shift the tone back to serious and leave the audience with a little bit of a teary eye.
If you like this reading, keep your eyes peeled next Sunday and every Sunday from here on out for more wedding readings for the Best Man, couples, parents and maids of honour.
