The Wedding Ring Finger: Which Hand Do Your Wedding & Engagement Rings Go On?

You will have always referred to one of your fingers as ‘the ring finger’, but do you know why? In the UK it is because the engagement and wedding ring traditionally sit on that finger. But do you know which hand your wedding ring finger is on? Read on for the answers to all your burning questions including: Where did the traditions of wedding rings start? How do you wear an engagement and wedding ring together? And do you even have to wear a wedding ring at all?

So Which IS the Wedding Ring Finger?

In the UK, the wedding ring finger can be found on the left hand. It is the second finger in from the left, AKA the one right next to your pinky. This is also the finger that you wear your engagement ring on.

Wearing your rings on this finger is a tradition which dates all the way back to Roman times. Back then it was believed that a vein ran directly from the ring finger to the heart. The Romans also started the tradition of engagement rings, so it follows that both rings were worn on the heart finger.

Which Way Round Do My Wedding and Engagement Rings Go?

In the UK, the engagement ring is traditionally worn on top of the wedding ring. this is for two key reasons. One, the wedding ring is not intended to ever be taken off. This makes it easier to slip your engagement ring on and off. Secondly, The wedding ring is positioned closer to the heart in this configuration.

Many people choose not to wear both their wedding and engagement rings. Some choose to move their engagement ring to the right hand whilst others wear it intermittently depending on their outfit or the occasion.

Alternatively, you could opt to have your wedding and engagement rings soldered together so that they do not slide around on your finger. This is growing in popularity as an option since so many brides now opt for shaped to fit wedding rings.

Don’t forget to move your engagement ring to your right hand before you walk down the aisle. This way your wedding ring can take its rightful place on the wedding ring finger!

Do You Have to Wear a Wedding Ring?

The short answer to this is no. It is completely up to you how you choose to mark your married state. Whether you wish to wear a ring, a watch, a bracelet, a tattoo, or nothing at all, it is your choice.

That being said, we are suckers for romance. The symbolism of a wedding ring is lovely. The unending circle represents infinity, and the precious metal represents the inherent value of love. A wedding ring shows the world that you are committed to your partner.

Whatever you choose to do, the most important thing is that you are happy. Don’t wear a ring if it is only convention telling you that you should. But if you want to wear one, then go for it.
