Wedding Ring Widths and Profiles Explained

When choosing a plain wedding band, there are several options for customisation. This is to ensure that everybody is able to buy their ideal wedding ring that not only fits comfortably, but works with their personal style and taste. Knowing where to begin can be tricky when you don't wear a lot of jewellery, so we have broken down the key areas to get you started.

Wedding Ring Widths

The width of the ring is the amount of space along your finger it covers. When choosing your width, you should consider how present you want your ring to be on your finger. Will you find a larger, heavier ring obtrusive to wear, or would a slim ring feel lost or insubstantial on your hand?

Almost all of the rings we sell are between 2mm and 10mm. Most engagement rings tend to have a shank of around 2mm-2.5mm in width, so these slimmer widths are popular to be worn alongside them. However, this is not to say that your wedding ring must match the width of your engagement ring! The most popular width among our male customers is between 4mm-6mm.

When deciding what width to go for, you should remain wary of your ring size. The width can affect the fit of the ring, and even the comfort, as a wider ring means more skin is displaced. This can cause wider bands to fit much more tightly than narrower ones.

Wedding Ring Profiles

The profile of a wedding ring refers to the shape of the metal itself. This is best described as a cross-section. While initially rings of different profiles can look fairly similar, you will find that they fit and feel quite different.

COURT

A court profile is the most traditional shape for wedding bands. It has a softly rounded interior and exterior profile which sits harmoniously on the finger. This rounded shape means that court profile rings will feel very comfortable to wear.

DOUBLE COMFORT

The double comfort profile was designed by our in-house jewellers specifically for ultimate comfort. It consists of a flat interior and exterior profile with softly rounded corners. This modern yet timeless design is one of our best sellers.

D-SHAPE

D-Shape wedding rings are also very traditional option with a great visual impact. Popular with both men and women, these rings are flat on the inside and dramatically rounded on the outside. This profile provides a comfortable ring which sits close to the skin and is less likely to snag, while still appearing substantial on the finger.

FLAT

Flat profile rings have a highly modern look. The flat profile is exactly how it sounds: flat on both the interior and exterior, with crisply angled corners. The result is a chunky, contemporary style with a nice heavy feel.

FLAT COURT

Flat court rings combine modern and traditional features to create a wearable but stylish wedding ring. The outer profile is similar to the flat profile, however the flat court has a rounded inner face for a more comfortable fit. The flat court still retains the contemporary, crisp look of the flat profile when on the finger, but is much more comfortable to wear if you are not used to wearing rings.

FLAT-SIDED COURT

A flat-sided court wedding ring is rounded on the inside and outside like the traditional court, but has flat sides and a less domed profile. This means that they appear a bit more chunky when on the finger, and tend to weigh a little more than the traditional court wedding ring. We have found that the flat-sided court is a popular choice to sit alongside most engagement rings.

HALO

Halo profile wedding rings are shaped almost like a band of wire around the finger. They are perfectly round when viewed as a cross section. This is a very traditional style of ring, but can still look modern when paired with other jewellery. A halo profile ring works wonderfully as a spacer band between an engagement ring and eternity ring, but looks equally as beautiful worn alone.

CONCAVE

Concave profile rings are less common than our other profiles. Definitely a profile for those looking for something unique and interesting, the concave ring features a rounded interior face and a concave exterior. This unexpected outer curve allows gorgeous light play on the lustre of precious metals.
